One of the many outcomes of the November 6th election has been to draw attention to the role of women in American politics as well as abroad. This has been the best election for women yet, with twenty women now in the Senate. However, with women comprising over fifty percent of the population, the increased presence of women in congress hardly makes the government more representative.
The election results have also had the effect of examining America’s progress towards political equality for women relative to other nations. Even with recent gains for women in the political realm, when it comes to women in office, America is still lagging far behind its nations around the world. Notably, America is underrepresented compared to Afghanistan, South Africa, and Cuba.
